Ford Thunderbird import guide

From the 1955 two-seater to the 2002 retro car, nearly every Thunderbird is now old enough for 5% VAT. What to check for rust, which cars skip the MOT, and what the lights need.

The Thunderbird started life in 1955 as Ford's answer to the Corvette, a small two-seater with a V8 and a removable hardtop. It grew into a four-seat personal luxury car three years later and kept changing shape for decades. Almost every one was built for America with left-hand drive, so if you want a T-Bird in Britain it will most likely be coming from the USA. The good news is that most of them are now old enough to make the tax and testing side simple.

The generations, by age

Thunderbird fans tend to talk about the cars by their era rather than by a model code. Each one falls into a different age band here, and the band decides the import tax and the test. These are worked out from today, 12 October 2026, so they move on a little every year.

10 to 40 years: MOT. Over 40: no MOT if not substantially changed. The 5% rate applies to cars over 30 that qualify as historic. Ages worked out from October 2026.

The 1955 to 1957 cars are the ones most people mean when they say Thunderbird, and the ones that fetch the most money. The later four-seaters are bigger, softer cruisers and usually far cheaper to buy, which makes them a good way into an American classic. The 2002 to 2005 retro car is the only one young enough to pay full import tax.

What to check before you buy

Rust matters more than mileage on any old American car, and a Thunderbird is no different. A car that has spent its life in a dry state is a much better start than one from the snow belt, where salted roads eat floors and sills. Fresh paint can hide a lot, so ask for photos underneath as well as the glossy ones.

Our guides to buying a car abroad safely and buying a car from a US auction cover the general checks. If you can, have a marque specialist in the US look at the car before it ships.

Historic VAT and the MOT

A Thunderbird over 30 years old pays 5% import VAT and no duty, as long as it qualifies as historic. That generally means original and not substantially changed. Today that takes in every car built before October 1996, which is nearly the whole run apart from the retro model.

Cars built or first registered more than 40 years ago, so before October 1986, do not need an MOT on the same condition. GOV.UK counts replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine in a way that changes how the car works as a substantial change, so a restomod with a modern crate engine may still need one. The car has to be kept roadworthy either way, and we put older cars through an MOT as a check when we register them.

Every Thunderbird built before 1 January 1986 can also stop paying vehicle tax once it is registered. You have to apply for the exemption; it does not happen on its own. Our guide to importing a classic American car goes through all of these lines in more detail.

Lights on an old Thunderbird

The DVLA registers left-hand drive cars without asking for the steering to be moved. What usually needs attention is the lighting. A car first used before 1 April 1980 does not need a rear fog light, so the classic Thunderbirds have less to do than the later ones. Headlights set for driving on the right still need adjusting or replacing.

Cars from 1980 onwards are treated like any other American car: a rear fog light, and amber indicators if the car flashes red at the back. The full list is in our guide to converting an American car for UK roads, and left-hand drive cars in the UK covers living with the steering on the left. American cars read in mph already, so the speedometer is not a job.

Looking at an eighties car? A few months either side of October 1986 decides whether it needs an MOT, and 1 April 1980 decides the rear fog light. Send us the VIN before you buy and we will tell you where it sits.

Shipping a Thunderbird

We collect from anywhere in the USA and truck the car to the port, mainly New York, Savannah, Houston or Oakland. It is inspected and a condition report produced before loading. Most classics travel in a shared container, strapped down and sealed at the US end, then opened by our own team in Castle Donington. A car in a container does not need to run, which helps with a project.

As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping from the USA starts from £1,450, shipping only. The sea passage is around 2 weeks from the East Coast and around 4 from the West, with about 2 weeks before sailing for paperwork and loading. Our guides to shipping a car from the USA and shared and sole containers explain the options.

The title is the core export document, and for a sea shipment it has to be at the port at least 72 hours before the car leaves. If there is a loan on the car, the lender must give a signed letter allowing export.

Import tax

A qualifying Thunderbird over 30 pays 5% VAT and no duty. A younger one, which today means the retro car, pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT. Both are worked out on the price plus the shipping. If you are moving to the UK and qualify for Transfer of Residence, it can come in with no tax at all. The import tax calculator will run your own numbers, and insuring an imported car covers agreed-value cover.

Once the car is here, our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register it within 10 working days. For other Ford classics, see our Mustang and Falcon guides.

Questions people ask

Can I import a classic Ford Thunderbird to the UK?

Yes. A Thunderbird follows the same route as any classic American car: shipping, customs, any lighting changes, an MOT check where needed, then DVLA registration with the steering left where it is.

Does an old Thunderbird need an MOT?

Not if it was built or first registered more than 40 years ago, which today means before October 1986, and has not been substantially changed. It must still be roadworthy, and we put older cars through an MOT as a check when we register them.

How much tax will I pay on a Thunderbird?

A car over 30 that qualifies as historic pays 5% VAT and no duty, on the price plus shipping. That covers every Thunderbird built before October 1996. The 2002 to 2005 retro car pays 10% duty and 20% VAT.

Does a 1955 to 1957 Thunderbird need a rear fog light?

No. Cars first used before 1 April 1980 do not need one. The headlights still need setting up for driving on the left.

Do classic Thunderbirds pay road tax?

Cars built before 1 January 1986 can go into the historic tax class from 1 April 2026, so there is no vehicle tax to pay. You have to apply for the exemption.
