The Pulsar GTI-R is a small Nissan hatchback with a big job behind it. Nissan built it so it could go world rallying, which meant a 2.0 litre turbo engine and four-wheel drive squeezed into a three-door body. Here it was sold as the Sunny GTI-R, and good ones are now hard to find, so many buyers look to Japan. The good news is that every one is old enough for a simple MOT and the lower classic tax rate.

What makes it special
Under the bonnet is the SR20DET, the same family of turbo engine that went into the Silvia and other Nissans of the time. In the GTI-R it sits sideways and drives all four wheels through Nissan's ATTESA system and a five-speed manual gearbox. The big scoop on the bonnet feeds a top-mounted intercooler, and it is the easiest way to spot one.
| Feature | Pulsar GTI-R | Ordinary N14 Pulsar |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0 litre SR20DET turbo | Smaller non-turbo engines |
| Drive | Four-wheel drive | Mostly front-wheel drive |
| Body | Three-door hatch with bonnet scoop | Hatch, saloon and other bodies |
| Tax today | 5% VAT, no duty, if original | 5% VAT, no duty, if original |
Because it shares its body with the ordinary Pulsar, clones do turn up. Check the chassis number and the model code on the auction sheet and the export certificate, and make sure they agree with what the seller is calling the car.
What to check before you buy
These were cheap fast cars for a long time, and plenty have been modified, raced or simply run hard. A tidy one with its history is worth paying more for than a rough one with big power.

Our guide to Japanese auction grades explains how to read the sheet, and the Japanese export certificate guide covers the one document every car from Japan needs. If you are paying a private seller, buying a car abroad safely is worth a read first.
The test is a simple MOT
Every GTI-R is well over 10 years old, so GOV.UK exempts it from vehicle approval. There is no IVA test, and the speedometer does not have to be converted to mph, as that rule only applies to cars under 10 years old.
The oldest cars, from 1990, are about 36 years old now. The MOT exemption for historic vehicles starts at 40 years, so for the next few years every GTI-R still needs an MOT.
Import tax and the 5% rate
A car from Japan normally pays 10% import duty and 20% import VAT, worked out on the price plus the shipping, with the VAT charged on top of the duty. A car over 30 years old can instead pay 5% VAT and no duty. Working from 12 October 2026, every GTI-R is past that line.
Age is not the only condition. HMRC treats the reduced rate as being for collectors' pieces of historical interest, and GOV.UK's guidance expects the car to be in its original state. Restoration and like-for-like repairs are fine. A car that has been tuned well beyond standard, modernised or turned into a rally replica can be refused. Our guide to the historic vehicle 5% VAT rules sets out HMRC's conditions in full.
Original or modified? Send us the auction sheet and a list of the changes before you buy. We will tell you whether the car is likely to qualify for the 5% rate and price the job both ways.
If you are moving to the UK, have lived abroad for at least 12 months and have owned the car for at least 6, Transfer of Residence can bring it in with no VAT or duty. The import tax calculator runs your own numbers, and our cost of importing from Japan guide works through a full example.
Shipping a GTI-R
From Japan, RoRo is the usual route and costs less than a container. The car has to run and drive, and it should be empty, with no spare parts or wheels left inside. A container is the answer if the car does not run, or if you would rather it was sealed away for the voyage.
As a guide, built from a year of real jobs, shipping from Japan starts from £3,575, shipping only. Door to door, the journey is usually about 5 to 8 weeks. The documents are the Japanese export certificate, the purchase invoice or auction paperwork, and your passport.
Getting it road legal
A Japanese GTI-R is right-hand drive, so the usual change is a rear fog light, fitted in the right position if one is missing. Japanese cars are no longer checked for headlight compliance. The car then takes its MOT.
If the car has been modified, the MOT tester will look at the changes like any others, and your insurer will want to know about every one. Our guide to importing a modified car explains what to expect, and insuring a Japanese import covers what insurers ask for.
We do the work and the MOT on our own site in Castle Donington, and our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register the car within 10 working days. For the full route, see our guide to importing a car from Japan.
Living with one
Engine parts are helped by the SR20 being used across a lot of Nissans, and our Silvia S15 guide covers another car from the same engine family. Trim, body panels and parts unique to the GTI-R are harder to find, so buying the most complete car you can usually works out cheaper. Our guide to parts and servicing for imported cars covers the options.
Questions people ask
Can I import a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R to the UK?
Yes. It follows the same route as any car from Japan: shipping, customs, a rear fog light if needed, an MOT, then DVLA registration.
Does an imported Pulsar GTI-R need an IVA test?
No. Production ended in 1994, so every GTI-R is over 10 years old and exempt from vehicle approval. It takes an MOT instead.
Does a Pulsar GTI-R qualify for 5% import VAT?
On age, yes. Every GTI-R is over 30 years old as of October 2026. HMRC also expects the car to be in its original state, so a heavily modified car may not qualify.
Is a Pulsar GTI-R exempt from the MOT?
Not yet. The exemption starts at 40 years old, and the oldest GTI-Rs are about 36, so they still need an MOT for now.
Do I need to convert the speedometer to mph?
Not for registration. The mph rule applies to cars under 10 years old, and every GTI-R is far older than that.
