People moving from the Isle of Man often brace themselves for customs forms, import tax and weeks of waiting. Most of that does not apply. The Isle of Man and the UK are treated as one area for customs and VAT, so the job is mostly about the crossing and the change of plates.

How the car gets here
Douglas Harbour is the island's main commercial port. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company runs a year-round vehicle and passenger service from Douglas to Heysham in Lancashire, which is a sensible run down the motorway to our site in Castle Donington.
The ferry itself typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the port. RoRo freight is around 12 to 24 hours and a container from days to a week. Door to door, allowing for collection and booking, European moves usually take 1 to 4 weeks. Our Douglas port page has more on the harbour.
Customs and tax
GOV.UK is clear on the main point: you do not need an import declaration to bring a vehicle into Great Britain from the Isle of Man. HMRC also treats the island as part of the UK for VAT purposes, with Manx VAT law broadly mirroring the UK's.
What that means for you is that a car coming over normally has no import VAT or duty to pay at the border, unlike a car from Jersey, Guernsey or the EU. If anything about your car's history makes that less straightforward, such as a recent purchase from outside the island, we will flag it and confirm the position on your quote.
NOVA, or not
For most imports, HMRC has to be told within 14 days through the Notification of Vehicle Arrivals service, known as NOVA. Isle of Man cars are the exception. If the car is registered in the Isle of Man, GOV.UK says no NOVA application is needed.
Two cases are different. If the car is not registered on the island, or it still has UK plates, HMRC asks for a form NOVA1 and a covering letter to its Personal Transport Unit. That is a paper process rather than the usual online one, and we can sort it with you.
Check which plates the car is on. A Manx-registered car follows the simple route. One still on UK plates, or never registered on the island, needs the NOVA1 letter first.
Registration still changes
No customs does not mean no paperwork. A Manx car needs to go onto the UK register and get a UK registration number before it can be used here for good. GOV.UK's route is form V55 plus the Isle of Man registration document, sent to the DVLA.
The car also needs to show it is fit for UK roads. Our usual testing rules apply:
- Under 10 years old: an IVA test, or a Certificate of Conformity where the car has one
- Over 10 years old: an MOT, with any changes generally coming down to the rear fog light
- Over 40 years old: no MOT needed
Manx cars are right-hand drive and built for driving on the left, so the headlight work that continental cars need does not usually come into it. We run one of only seven privately operated IVA centres in Great Britain, so any test happens on our own site, and our dealer-level DVLA account lets us register imported cars within 10 working days. See registering an imported car for how the DVLA side works.

What it costs
We do not publish a guide price for the Isle of Man, because short crossings are priced per job. The main variables are whether you drive it over or we move it, and what the car needs to pass its test. With normally no import tax to add, the quote is usually the whole picture. Our guide to how long registration takes covers the timing at this end.
Questions people ask
Do I pay import tax on a car from the Isle of Man?
Normally no. The Isle of Man and the UK are treated as one area for customs and VAT, and GOV.UK says no import declaration is needed. We confirm the position for your car on the quote.
Do I need to tell HMRC through NOVA?
Not if the car is registered in the Isle of Man. If it is not, or it still has UK plates, HMRC asks for form NOVA1 and a covering letter to its Personal Transport Unit.
Does a Manx car need UK registration?
Yes. It needs to go onto the UK register with form V55 and the Isle of Man registration document, and it must pass the right test first. We handle both.
What test does the car need?
Under 10 years old, an IVA test or a Certificate of Conformity. Over 10 years old, an MOT. Over 40 years old, no MOT is needed.
How long does it take?
